Squarespace Benchmarks

Squarespace is a hosted website builder known for design focused templates and integrated tools. This page shows how Squarespace sites perform and what they run, from a sample of 89,196 US websites.

About Squarespace

Built for

Creators, small businesses, and service brands that want polished sites without managing hosting or software updates.

Most common use

A portfolio or small business website.

Strengths
  • Polished templates and visual consistency
  • Integrated blogging, forms, and commerce
  • Hosted security and maintenance
Watch-outs
  • Less flexible than open source CMS options
  • Deep custom functionality is more constrained
  • Advanced ecommerce needs may outgrow it

What we see on Squarespace sites

What Squarespace does well
  • Despite the luxury brand positioning, most Squarespace sites in our corpus are service businesses: photographers, consultants, coaches, and therapists. The aesthetic does the selling.
  • Built-in blogging creates natural content depth on Squarespace sites -- more so than on comparable builder platforms. The editorial workflow is low-friction enough that people actually use it.
  • Squarespace's integrated toolset (forms, scheduling, newsletter) means these sites have fewer third-party dependencies than the Wix or WordPress equivalents.
Common issues
  • LCP is architecturally slow on Squarespace -- it's a platform constraint, not user error. We don't recommend spending time here; we recommend understanding the tradeoff.
  • Code injections (added via Settings > Advanced) that weren't removed after a campaign ended. Old tracking pixels and popup scripts running years later.
  • Thin service pages that describe what someone does without giving Google enough to work with. One paragraph per service is not enough.
Things we've noticed
  • Squarespace has the lowest mobile Lighthouse scores of any major platform we benchmark, yet some of the highest visual design quality. The lab-vs-field divergence here is one of the largest we see.
  • Service businesses dominate our Squarespace corpus: photographers, consultants, coaches, and therapists account for a higher share of Squarespace sites than on any other platform we benchmark.
