Shopify Benchmarks

Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform for selling products online and in person. This page shows how Shopify sites perform and what they run, from a sample of 72,063 US websites.

About Shopify

Built for

Small to mid sized merchants, plus some larger brands, that want managed ecommerce infrastructure and fast launch.

Most common use

An online store.

Strengths
  • Fast store setup and managed hosting
  • Large app and theme ecosystem
  • Strong checkout and payment tools
Watch-outs
  • App and transaction costs can add up
  • Custom features may need apps or Liquid
  • Content management is lighter than full CMSs

What we see on Shopify sites

What Shopify does well
  • Shopify handles infrastructure well enough that the gaps tend to be content and strategy, not technical. When we see low scores on Shopify sites, the fix is usually a copywriting or offer problem, not a code problem.
  • Sites using Shopify Payments show stronger trust signal density than those using third-party processors -- the checkout integration appears to prompt more intentional trust-building.
  • Schema coverage on top-tier Shopify stores is notably higher than on comparable Magento or WooCommerce stores. The ecommerce-native platform builds good habits.
Common issues
  • App sprawl. We regularly see 8-15 third-party scripts loaded globally on every page -- including pages where the app does nothing. Each uninstall should be followed by a manual script audit.
  • Product pages carrying manufacturer descriptions copied verbatim across hundreds of variants. Google notices when 400 product pages read identically.
  • Thin category and collection pages that don't support organic discovery. The product catalog is deep; the navigation into it is not.
Things we've noticed
  • 92% of Shopify sites in our corpus use a payment tool -- the highest rate of any platform we benchmark. Commerce is the point.
  • Shopify's CDN is detected on 100% of Shopify sites we've scanned. The infrastructure consistency is unmatched.
